With its prime location in the heart of Arusha National Park, Mount Meru serves as the perfect warm-up for Kilimanjaro Expeditions. As Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, this impressive volcano stands 14,980 ft or 4,565 metres above sea level and offers excellent acclimatisation for those who are planning a journey to the Roof of Africa.

 

Mount Meru Expeditions are perfect for safari travellers too, particularly those who are looking for a shorter hike before heading off to the Serengeti. It has fewer crowds and Kilimanjaro, and you can hike it in just 3 or 4 days.

 

Kilimanjaro Company offers Mt. Meru Expeditions for singles, couples, and groups of every size. All our trips are escorted by KPAP (Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project) Tanzanian-climbing crew, and supportive of local communities. Pre-and-post climb accommodations and airport transfers are included, so the only extras you need to budget for are dinner/drinks at the hotel in Moshi and tips for your mountain crew. MOUNT MERU ITINERARY

 

DAY 1: ARRIVE KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, please proceed to the arrivals hall where your driver will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. After hotel check-in, you will have a few hours to relax before meeting with your guide(s) for a briefing.

DAY 2: MOSHI – ARUSHA – MIRIAKAMBA HUT

After breakfast today, you’ll leave Moshi and transfer to Arusha where you will register for your Mt. Meru expedition at the Momella Gate. From here, you will set off with your guide and an armed ranger as you make your way through Arusha National Park, home to an abundance of wildlife including giraffe, zebras, buffalos, antelope, and monkeys. Your hike will start in the rainforest and take you to Miriakamba Hut where you will dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: MIRIAKAMBA HUT – SADDLE HUT

Today is a relatively short hike, but it's steep in some parts, and it will test your legs as you make your way from Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut where you will enjoy lunch. Afterwards, you’ll hike to the summit crater of Little Meru at 12,532ft or 3,820m above sea level for spectacular views, before returning to Saddle Hut for dinner and overnight. Tomorrow is summit day!

DAY 4: SADDLE HUT – SUMMIT – MOMELLA GATE

Your guide will wake you at 1 am for your summit attempt. After filling your backpack with any essentials, you’ll depart on a steep trail to Rhino Point at 12,465ft or 3,800m, before continuing to Cobra Point at 14,270ft or 4,350m. From here, you’ll continue to the summit at 14,947ft or 4,566m just in time for sunrise. On a clear day, you’ll see Kilimanjaro’s magnificent peak above the clouds. After taking those all-important summit photographs, you’ll return to Saddle Hut for brunch, for descending further to Momella Gate where you will transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a night of celebrations.
